On my way home from Indiana, PA on Saturday, I encountered a TON of fun country roads NE of Pittsburgh. These roads are basically lots of neat hills with curves in them, fun apexes, and all connected together with scenic stretches. The speed limits are sorta low (45 mph - 55 mph) but the locals all go 70+ on them for some reason.

Completely depends on what you’d consider “great” and how much time you’ve got. If you use the “avoid highways” option, you’ll get the local roads like 125. Maybe I’m just used to it, but they’re all pretty similar to me once your off-highway. If you route through state forests, a lot of those roads are dirt and make for a nice drive.

Kelly Road, in Ohioville, a mile-long stretch of road nicknamed “Mystery Mile” by former residents, is reported to be the site of supernatural activity. Animals along this road turn from docile to violent without explanation, often chasing after people and each other. The thick forest that the road cuts through is known for unexplained noises and white apparitions. The origin of these events is unknown, and speculation ranges from some kind of curse on the land to cult activity once tied to this region.

If you’re ever joy-riding in WI, take HWY-60. Specifically from Sauk City to Spring Green:

And from Gotham to Muscoda:

Both a very enjoyable drives (so long as no one is in front of you).

Stick to state roads, esp. around midstate. The roads from Pittsburgh to Chambersburg were epic.

Rt 125 is fun, especially at about twice the posted speed.

So many curvy roads, so little time.

Pretty similar in that they all have curves. We don’t get those in Michigan.

I’m trying to not add to much time to the trip as to not annoy the girlfriend.

Twice the posted limit is generally the rule for curvy roads. Good to know its fun though!

It appears to be blocked off, but there are some pictures of Jeeps on it.

I mean Pittsburgh city sucks, but the boonies around here are the literal best. I drove down this way thru Virginia and the roads were incredible. Appalachians FTW.

Centralia’s cool. Not much of a “driving” road from what I remember, more just disaster porn. Very cool/creepy place. The burbs/ farm land & hills outside of West Chester is going to have some great twisties - close enough to 76 depending on where you start.

Now that I’m thinking about it more, especially as you get to the middle of the state, just pick a road that crosses the most mountains. If you look at a topo map, the south and central parts of the state are long ridges with straight valley roads running between the peaks. The N-S roads generally cross the mountains, the E-W roads skirt the valleys. The northern end is much more haphazardly placed mountains and every road crosses several. I’m thinking there’s got to be a better spot than 125, I was just on it 2 months ago and didn’t find anything noteworthy about it (but again, maybe I’m just used to this stuff).

My one Appalachia driving experience was tail of the dragon, so I’d agree. Just trying to find a good fun route that doesn’t add too much time.

I’ll probably just browse google maps over the next couple of days.

I was thinking about wording the Centralia part differently. Not trying to drive on broken pavement, just a fun pit stop.

Good to know and N-S, E-W roads and that 125 isn’t the most noteworthy. Guess I’ll keep perusing google maps for a more fun route.

Also, I don’t think I was on the really twisted section that you’re more interested in, and my commute is on much smaller roads with a few spots I can get at least on tire off the ground, and one where I’m pretty sure all 4 leave the pavement. It was probably too smooth to be noteworthy for me.

US 6 is a decently good driving road, and has some incredible scenery (it’s considered one of the most scenic routes in America). There’s the Kinzua Bridge, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Wellsboro (which still relies on gas street lamps instead of electric), the Tunkhannock Viaduct, and if you’re not averse to gravel you can take a little detour and drive some actual rally stages.

That is a ways away from from where I live. Miss Mercedes is correct as I work a little south of that area. Many of the twisty roads do not have street view on Google maps. I found these 2 side trips that look fun:

1. 504 looks like it has some good hillside twists. I think it will slow down in the state park though.

Kinja'd!!!

2. Piney Dam Rd [3016] and Laurel Rd look like a good valley drive, and you can get off 80 at one exit and get back on the next.

Kinja'd!!!

I find it helps to have an old Garmin gps to tell you the upcoming curves in the road and sometimes the speed limit.

This was literally me reading “actual rally stages”:

But then I saw where US 6 was. Thats up there.

Also found this map, which might prove useful.

This was the information I was looking for, just don’t think I want to add 2 hours to the road trip. I mean, I would, did that for tail of the dragon. But the girlfriend will be in the car this time.

I only know of route 125 from a google search, certainly open to twisty-er roads. A tire off the ground sounds like fun.

That’s why I mentioned the scenic part. That’s your sales pitch. Also, I can get you proper stage maps. You’d probably only be able to do one or two, but they’re great roads

It’s a good way to put a smile on your face after a long day of bullshit. So much better than carrying it all the way home. But you’re not likely to find anything like that on a numbered road (and not really worth driving out of your for), but are likely to find on short connecting roads that nobody has any business being on unless you live there. Up north where Dusty suggested is nice though, I often wish I still lived up there. I can see all but 2 of my homes on your map, it’s weird.

I like your mindset, but you don’t have to put in any effort. I probably won’t go up that far. Getting side ways is always the goal, though I’d feel guilty going out of the way to do it. At least everything in the middle of the state is “on the way”.

These look like fun and are only nice little detours. Thanks! There is also a disused train tunnel/bridge on the second route.
